Lowes and Home Depot both get a ton of pallets that they don't re-use. Most of the odd sized pallets that they get are just given away. They also don't do much local with local donations, but if you can talk with the store manager and explain your needs, they might be more willing to help you out. Getting rid of unwanted pallets is something they can do without corporate approval in most cases. Don't worry if you drive around the store and don't see pallets stacked up. They get hundreds of pallets each week and can set some aside for you.

These big box stores are also a great place to get large cardboard boxes! They sell LARGE appliances like refrigerators and such. You just have to ask!

If you have your license and a pickup just go drive around and look

Look behind any industrial or commercial complex/park

Just a thought: Look for small family owned Barbecue restaurants that do NOT make their own sauce. I used to get food grade 55 gallon drums from a company years ago, because it saved them from having to pay for disposal.

As far as pallets go, check with feed stores, grocery stores, Sears outlets, small department stores, Farm equipment stores (also a good place for styrofoam blocks, fyi), any industrial business. If you look long enough, you will find exactly what you need.

Although I have a regular place I go to, I see them listed on Craigslist on a daily basis.
